1 Thessalonians 5:23–28 (ESV)
Final Instructions and Benediction
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
25 Brothers, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
27 I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
The is the continuation of the closing of the first letter written to the Thessalonians.
There is comfort in hearing “may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely”, but the next part should not be eye opening. It states “may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This is saying that we need to flee from sin and be kept blameless until Jesus returns. This should not be a surprise to us. I mean, this is how we all live... isn’t it? We are to pray and greet each other with a “holy kiss”.
Well... maybe times have changed some. But we should greet each other with love and sincerity. Now the next sentence instructs us what to do with this letter. “I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the
brothers.” Well, I held to this oath by putting this whole letter on my blog site for you to read.
I pray: O Lord, continue to sanctify me and help me to not fight the work of the Holy Spirit,
but to embrace your hand as you shape and mold me. Forgive me of my sins and restore me into your kingdom. Amen.
