Romans 9:27–29 (ESV)
God’s Sovereign Choice (Part 4)
27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved, 28 for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.” 29
And as Isaiah predicted,
“If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring,
we would have been like Sodom
and become like Gomorrah.”
As Isaiah cries out, this message is proclaimed in many places that not all people will go to heaven. Only a remnant of them will
be saved. The ticket into heaven is “faith”. That is... do you believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior. This is the teaching of John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes
in him should not perish but have eternal life.” There are many that reject Jesus and there are many who have turned away.
God’s judgement is clearly proclaimed in the Old Testament as well as the
New Testament. I think of the reference in today’s reading to Sodom and Gomorrah. It is interesting to compare God’s saving actions to what happens to Lot. Lot did not want to leave Sodom, but had to be lead out by hand.
We do not want to believe in God, but it is he who gives us faith and leads us out to our Salvation. Not all are saved.
I pray: O Lord, give us a penitent heart and confidence in Your grace. Thank
You for choosing us and calling us to faith in Christ. Amen.
