Romans 7:1–6 (ESV)
Released from the Law
7 Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.

Today’s reading has some biblically tough statements.  Please stick with me as we go through this.  It is too easy to get up and walk away and miss saving point!  I know I have a lot of people in my congregation who have divorced and remarried.  As well, I have a lot of readers and friends that have gone through the pains of divorce.  The reading today says that if your ex-spouse is still alive and you remarry... you commit adultery.   I have had people get up and walk out of church on this statement.  Please notice that it is NOT my statement, but the Bible’s statement.  I usually have someone shocked and say ... “do you mean I am an adulteress(er)?”  I have to ask them to settle down and answer a simple question.  That question is “Are you a sinner?”  It is easy to say yes, but it is like a punch in the gut when you realize that you really are a sinner!  Well, we all are sinners!  So sit back down and wait!  Because of our sins, this means we need to cling to Jesus all the more!  He is our only hope.  This part has been the Law and it is tough and it hurts.

Now I want to write about the Gospel which is in this same reading.  Slow down and read this portion of the reading.  “4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.”  If you had walked out on the first part of the reading, then you would have missed the second part.  The Gospel is what Jesus has done for you.  He has given you faith, forgiveness, eternal life, and has released you from the law.  Glory be to God.  The Lutheran Study Bible states: “As the Law confronts fallen human nature, it accuses and condemns, revealing sinfulness and the unreachable standard of God’s holiness. Faithless people may be driven to sin and despair by the Law (v 5). Thanks be to God, in Christ we have died to the Law (v 4). Now we need not live in bondage and fear, but in a new life in the Spirit.”

I pray: O Holy Spirit, fill me with faith and new life, so that I may bear the fruit of love for You. Amen.

Look at the Words say they "fell away". The had it, but lost it. Just like the Bible says your name can be blotted out of the Book of Life.
