Mark 16:1–8 (ESV)
the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 And they were saying to one another,
“Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white
robe, and they were alarmed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you
to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
The Resurrection is amazing. Some could claim that Jesus was a great magician, but dead is dead. God raised His Son up from the dead. Think about dead is dead! Luke was a physician and he would have known if Jesus was dead.
The spear stuck into his side produced blood and water. This separation takes place after death. The guards knew he was dead. But here on the first day of the week (Sunday), the stone was rolled back and the body was gone. They are
told by an angel “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee.
There you will see him, just as he told you.” You know, 2,000 years later, death is still final. Well, doctors have a window that they MAY be able to shock a body back to life, but Jesus has been dead for three days. Doctors 2,000
years later (today) can not bring back a body that has been dead for three days. Their time window is probably from 0-30 minutes, with some extending beyond this. If they drowned in ice water, then that can be extended several hours. Whatever
the case, Jesus died and God raised (resurrected) him back to life. Glory be to God! God accepted Jesus life, death, and resurrected him for the atonement of our sins. God rubber stamped our sins as “Paid For”!
I pray: O Lord, I’m sure I would have been confused and afraid if I had arrived at the tomb and the body was gone. Help me to “not be alarmed” or “not be afraid” when you are working
miracles around me. Especially the miracles of baptism, faith, and the Lord’s Supper!” Amen.
