Mark 12:35–37 (ESV)
Whose Son Is the Christ?
35 And as Jesus
taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,
“ ‘The
Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’
37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
It is interesting that Jesus is talking about the Scribes when he
says “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? Jesus points out that it was David himself that says “The Lord said to my Lord,...” David would not refer to his descendant as “my Lord”.
When Jesus says this, he is indicating that “my Lord” is superior to David in that Jesus is the Messiah. The Lutheran Study Bible states: “Jesus challenges His audience to think about the Messiah and realize that He is more than a man.
He is God as well. Unbelief blinds people so they do not see Christ in the OT (cf 2Co 3:12–18). God became man, born of Mary, born under the Law, to redeem sinners such as we (cf Gal 4:4–5).”
I
pray, O Lord, help me to always remember that you are the teacher and I am the student. You are superior to me. I am a mere man, created by you. Help me to always keep this in balancd with my life. Amen.
