Mark 5:24–34 (ESV)

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’s Daughter (Part 2)

24 And he went with him.  And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. 25And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, "If I touch even his garments, I will be made well." 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my garments?"31 And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ " 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease."

On the way to heal Jairus’ daughter, a woman "who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years" approached Jesus. She had been to many doctors and spent all her money trying to get well. Her hope... lost... but here comes Jesus. A renewed hope! She had heard of Jesus’ miracles. She approaches with a humble heart... and believing... "If I touch even his garments, I will be made well." Then something really fascinating happens. She touches Jesus’ garment and she is immediately healed... and she knows it! Yet at the same time... Jesus "turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my garments?" Jesus had felt power leave him when she touched him. Jesus knew what was going on. The lady who had lost all hope, found hope restored in Jesus, and He restored her. The scriptures say:  "but the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth." She is a changed... and broken (in a very good way) woman, and she fell down before Jesus and told him everything. Jesus responds "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease." This miracle is really a side bar to another miracle that is about to happen. We will get to that tomorrow. What I find fascinating is Jesus feeling power leave him.

I pray: O Lord, I must admit that I too often try to handle things on my own instead of including you. Help me to trust and believe like this woman, but to do it before I use up my financial resources so that I can use that money (it’s your money) to further your kingdom. Forgive me and renew me. Amen.
