Mark 3:13–21 (ESV)
The Twelve Apostles
13 And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach 15 and have authority to cast out demons. 16 He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
20 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”

Jesus calls a Summit Meeting and there he chooses his management team.  Well, that’s not quite true.  He does chose twelve disciples and calls them apostles.  Notice the last name in the list, Judas Iscariot... “who betrayed him”.  Jesus new up front that Judas would betray him, but he still works through these twelve and will later send them out to preach the Gospel and to cast out demons.  Jesus does not do it all by himself, but works through people, even you and me.    The  next paragraph takes some strange twists and scholars don’t vary differently on how to interpret  the words.  Especially when it says “Then he went home”.  Does this mean he went to his boyhood home, or he sent to his current home... or maybe he sent to him home area.  I can say “I’m going home.”  This could mean 1) I’m about to die, 2) I’m going to my house (Shreveport), 3) I’m going to Texas, or maybe 4) I’m going to Houston (boyhood home).  There are other options too.  We also get a strange reference where Jesus’ family think he is wacked out of his mind.  Not quite sure what is going on in this verse, nor to many commentaries understand this one either.  We know that Jesus was not “out of his mind”.

I pray: O Lord, you chose twelve to serve as apostles.  I know you have also chosen me to be a believer.  Use me O Lord to further your Kingdom, but guide me... I need all the help I can get.  Amen.
