Mark 1:40–45 (ESV)
Jesus Cleanses a Leper
40 And a leper came
to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he
was made clean. 43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” 45
But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.
reading is very moving and touching. It shows Jesus concern and compassion. A leper comes to him, pleading and kneeling to Jesus. He wants to be healed and he has heard about Jesus. His plea is simple: “If you will, you can make
me clean.” This leper knows that Jesus can heal him. Jesus is moved. Jesus is moved so much that he reaches out and “touched him.” Think about this... Jesus touches and “unclean” leper. Under Jewish
law, you are not to touch an unclean person... especially a leper, It will make you unclean. But instead of making Jesus unclean, there is a reversal and the leper becomes “clean”. Jesus sends the man to the priest to be declared clean.
This man is on fire! Not a literal fire, but with a burning spirit! Instead of going to the priest, he tells others about Jesus. There is nothing like the fire of a newly converted Christian. You can’t get this guy to shut up...
he must proclaim Jesus! We too are supposed to be this way.
I pray: O Lord, ignite a fire within me to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people. Give me a renewed excitement
and a deeper enthusiasm for reaching out to the lost. Help me to have compassion on all people. Amen.
