Mark 1:21–28 (ESV)
Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Today’s text seems to be about Jesus healing a demon possessed man.  Which this is true, but something even bigger is going on that is easy to be missed.  First, Jesus is teaching enters the synagogue and begins teaching.  It is interesting that Jesus is teaching with such authority, that they were all amazed... even the demon possessed man.  His authority surpasses even that of the scribes.   Second, the demon possessed man knows who Jesus is and knows that he is in trouble.  He asks Jesus “Have you come to destroy us?  I know who you are–the Holy One of God.”  How does the demon possessed man know who Jesus is?  Well the demon would have known Jesus in heaven before Lucifer and his demons were kicked out.  If you are wondering if Jesus is God, well the disciples are saying he is and even the demon knows that Jesus is the Son of God.  Thirdly, outside of the healing of the demon possessed man is purely evangelical outreach.  They were amazed at his teaching and they told others.  Scripture says “And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.  It is easy to be wowed over the healing, but there is much more going on.

I pray: O Lord, help me to share the Good News that Jesus Christ is the Son of God to all people.  It is easy to hold back this message for fear of how others will take it and what they will think about me.  Help me to understand that it is not about me, but about Jesus Christ.  Ignite a fire in me to be bold on sharing the Good News with all people.  Amen.
