Mark 1:9–11 (ESV)
The Baptism of Jesus
9 In those days Jesus
came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved
Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Sometimes I want to tell Mark to slow down! You think about it, only 9 verses into his Gospel, Jesus is being baptized. This is where Jesus is anointed
into the ministry. Mark does include God the Father speaking at the baptism saying “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Mark doesn’t slow down, but keeps the momentum going.
There is a simplicity that Mark brings to the table. The Gospel can be given in a short and to the point message. I pray: O Lord, help me to not over complicate the message of Jesus Christ. Too often we get bogged down in the
details, but Lord, Your Word and message is simple. Direct me as I study your Word. Amen.
