Ephesians 5:1–6 (ESV)
Walk in Love
5 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

Today’s reading says “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.”  To be an imitator is to imitate something that is not you, but imitating someone else, place or thing.  To be an imitator of God means to imitate and be like God, not yourself.  It’s hard to sin when you are imitating God.  Sin comes easy when we are simply being yourself.  How do we imitate God?  Well, God is Love.  Wo we walk in love.  But if we are not imitating God, then we run into danger.  We are not to be sexually immoral or covetousness.  Being a man with twisted humor, verse 4 speaks to me quite clearly.  “4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”    One thing I have learned is that humor often comes with some negative consequences.  As a pastor, I have had to learn to hold back on my sense of humor.   It has gotten me into trouble and will still probably continue.  I do learn from these instances, but I wish I could learn before something happens instead of having to pick up the pieces.  To all people out there, please remember that pastors are sinful human beings.  We sin too.  We all fall short of the glory of God and we all are in need of forgiveness.  What is the penalty?  The inheritance of the kingdom of Christ and God.

I pray: O Lord, I repent of my sins and want to do better.  Help me to imitate you and to walk in love.  Help me to learn from my mistakes and to grow in faith and walk.  Amen.
