1 John 1:5–10 (ESV)
Walking in the Light
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

In the Gospel of John, he made a lot of references that God is light and darkness belongs to evil.  John continues this theme in his letter 1 John.  This is the message that John wants to proclaim, that God is light.  John say that if we have fellowship with Christ, we will walk in the light, not in darkness.  John also states that if we confess our sins, Jesus is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  I want to stop right here, because I hear a lot of Christians say they have no sin.  They say that they are not sinners.  The Bible speaks differently about this.  The Bible says that we are all sinful.  In fact it says that we are sinful from birth.  I know that I sin every day.  In fact, I do confess that I am sinful and that it is Jesus who forgives me.  How can I say that I’m not a sinner?  Well, listen to what John writes in today’s reading.  John writes “10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”  As a Lutheran, we begin our worship service by confessing that we are sinners and we receive Jesus’ forgiveness.  We don’t have a problem confessing that we sin, I would be concerned for those who say they are without sin.

I pray: O Lord, John writes that if we confess our sins, Jesus is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  O Lord, I confess that I have sinned and I am in need of your forgiveness.  Forgive me Lord through the blood and merits of Jesus Christ, who is my Lord and Savior.  Amen.
