John 18:25–27 (ESV)
Peter Denies Jesus Again
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter
had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.
Jesus told Peter that he would deny Jesus three times. Today’s
reading is denial #2 and #3. Peter is trying to blend in by standing by the fire to stay warm. They said to him,”You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” Peter said “Iam not”. This is the second denial.
The third denial is immediately afterwards. One of the servants makes the third accusation. He is the relative of Malchus, whose ear Peter cut off in the garden. I’m sure the event was etched in his mind... and Malchus’s mind
too. Peter denied it (denial #3) and at once a rooster crowed, which fulfilled Jesus prophecy. The rooster serves as the cookie jar. Peter is busted!
I pray: O Lord, you see all things.
There is nowhere to hide from your all seeing eyes. I plead guilty and repent of my sins. I want to do better. Forgive me and restore me into your kingdom. Amen.
