John 18:19–24 (ESV)
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in
secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” 24 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
reading has an ironic twist to it. Jesus never spoke in secret, but he did use parables to speak so that believers understood and nonbelievers didn’t. The high priest was questioning Jesus, but one of the officers thought Jesus was being
disrespectful to the high priest. He struck Jesus with his hand and saying “Is that how you answer the high priest?” The interesting twist is that Jesus IS the High Priest. If they understood what Jesus was teaching and preaching,
then why was the officer disrespectful by hitting the High Priest, the Son of God, Jesus Christ???? I would like to have a few words with the officer!
I pray: O Lord, you are my Lord, my
Prophet, Priest, and King. I’m sorry for everything you had to go through, yet at the same time... I give thanks. The people didn’t understand your plan of salvation. Your plan was for all people, especially me. Help me
to endure unto the end in the faith you have given me. Amen.
