John 16:29–33 (ESV)
I Have Overcome the World
29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need
anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming,
indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
The disciples think they understand Jesus, but their understanding
falls way short. They still do not know about what is to come. Jesus warns them that the hour is coming when they will be scattered. They do not foresee the coming tribulation. It is way bigger than they expect or understand.
The truth be told, the tribulation that is to come will rock their world. When Jesus is on trial and is crucified, they scatter because they fear for their lives. Their trust is gone. These are the people that lived and walked with Jesus.
We should take note and fear that this doesn’t happen to us. This is where we surround ourselves with God’s Word and his love. We keep our eyes focused on Jesus.
I pray: O Lord, you are my Lord and Savior. Help me to trust in you through all trials in life. Protect me from scattering and keep me focused on following you. I need your help. Amen.
