John 14:1–7 (ESV)
I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life
14“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a
place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4And you know the way to where I am going.” 5Thomas
said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If
you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Today’s reading has one of my favorite
verses in the Bible. It is the verse where Jesus says “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” A very clear message to our Post Modern World that believes there are many paths
to heaven. Be a good Christian, a good Muslim, and good Hindu, a good Buddhist, a good Jew, or a good trans-meditationalist… and you will go to heaven. Jesus is making a clear statement that the ONLY way to heaven is through Jesus Christ.
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” The Post Modern world does not believe this in the religious arena. Post Modern typically is dumping current techniques or philosophies for
older ones. In religion, it seems to be taking on a new direction. It is a criticism about current religious thought and instead of going back to traditional religious thought, it turns to any and everything else. If it went back to traditional
thought, this would actually boost Christianity, but it is driving people away from it today.
I pray: O Lord, you tell us that you are the only way to
the Father. Help me to not get distracted by current philosophies, but to trust and follow your Word alone. Amen.
