John 13:36–38 (ESV)
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him,
“Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.
Peter, along with all the disciples, did not understand that Jesus must die for them. Jesus will go back to heaven and they can’t go with him… but their
turn will come. They will eventually die and go to be with Jesus. Jesus has been telling them that this must happen, but they just don’t understand it, perhaps even blind to it.
I pray: O Lord, I know that one day I will come home to you in heaven. It is only by your grace and mercy. My Salvation is totally from you, I have done nothing. You knew who was predestined even
before the world was created. How can I take credit for your work? Thank you for everything you have done for me. Amen.
