John 12:9–11 (ESV)
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9 When the large
crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews
were going away and believing in Jesus.
Great, it’s a short reading today, but kind of a shocker. To show the effects of sin, the chief priest are now plotting to kill Lazarus. Why?
Because he is threatening their way of life. People are flocking to see Jesus and Lazarus. Word is spreading abut the miracle. It was a BIG EVENT! Much like Doubting Thomas (we haven’t got there yet) had to see Jesus after the
resurrection, the people want to see Lazarus and talk to him. The want to see him alive, maybe to verify and ask him what really happened. He would have to tell them that he was dead and Jesus raised him back to life. Lazarus only solidifies
Jesus! You can’t deny this event. Even the chief priests can’t deny it. So they will try to eliminate the evidence! Isn’t it true how when a person is caught in a sin, they lie or hide evidence to keep the sin hidden.
It’s like a snowball rolling down a hill. The sin ball, I mean snow ball, gets bigger and bigger. I thought these were Godly men???
I pray: O Lord, when I sin, help me to not deny
it, but to confess it an my failings. Help me to repent and to want to do better. Confessing sins is not easy, but you already know them... help me to come out and confess them and receive your forgiveness. Amen.
