John 8:31–38 (ESV)
The Truth Will Set You Free
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

It is interesting that in verse 33, the Jews say they “have never been enslaved to anyone.”  Obviously they are forgetting about serving as political slaves in Egypt, Babylonia, Persia, Syria, and Rome.  But they are not talking about political slavery, but spiritual slavery.  The struggle is that these Jews were early believers, that is... they were newcomers to faith in Jesus, yet they were having difficulty of letting go of the law.  They were slaves to the law, because the law shows them their sins, thus making them slaves to sin.  True freedom comes only through Jesus who sets us free from the law and sin.  It is like they were holding on to a ladder which is the law, but Jesus is calling them to let go and cling to the ladder of faith.  You can’t hang on to both.  Jesus knows there struggles and in fact, he knows that they are going to be pushing for Jesus to be killed.  The old system doesn’t work in the new system.

I pray: O Lord, I believe in you as my Lord and Savior and you have set me free from the law, sin, and death.  Help me to live by faith, knowing that you have set me free.  Help all those who struggle with the law, to let go of the law and trust in Jesus who sets us free and gives us eternal life.  Amen.
