John 8:12–20 (ESV)
I Am the Light of the World (Part1)
12 Again Jesus spoke to them,
saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered,
“Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge,
my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. 17 In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”
19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one
arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
The Jews are having a hard time understanding what Jesus is talking about. They are of the understanding that Mary and Joseph are Jesus Parents and there is nothing really special about
him. He is as human as they are, and he is certainly not God. What they are missing is that Mary is his mother, but Joseph is not the father, although he raises him from the day he was born. Jesus didn’t begin when he was born, or even
conceived. Jesus was with God when the world was created. God is the Father... not Joseph. Christians look at Jesus from the perspective of God is his father and the Jews look at Jesus from the perspective that Joseph is the father.
When you read this from the Christian perspective, “I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going,” you realize that Jesus cam from Heaven and he is going back to heaven. When you
read “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also,” you realize that because the Jews think Joseph is the father... they really don’t know Jesus. If you know the Father... then you know that Jesus
is the son. The Jews just don’t get it, but some do or will. The real question to Jesus’ identity is “Who is the Father”. It’s not Darth Vader, but God the Father... creator of all things.
I pray: O Lord, I know your plan of Salvation began in heaven at the moment of Adam’s fall. You had a plan to rescue me from the moment of the fall in the garden. Thank you for choosing to save me, and to draw me to your heart.
I repent and want to do better. Amen.
