John 7:37–39 (ESV)
Rivers of Living Water
37
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
The last day is either the seventh or eighth
day of the feast. Jesus says, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” This helps confirm that John 6 is not
about the Lord’s Supper, but about believing. Jesus seems to be talking about physical thirsting, but by the end of the sentence, you can tell it is spiritual. It is about believing!
I pray:
O Lord, I believe! Help me to continue to believe and to not reject your love or your Word. I give thanks for your forgiveness. Amen.
