Can This Be the Christ?
of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really
that this is the Christ? 27 But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have
not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” 30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet many of the
people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”
The people know that the Jews are trying to kill Jesus, but when they have the chance...
they do nothing. That is because God is in control and it is not Jesus’s time to die. That will come in Jerusalem when they crucify him. You know, he could walk right up to the Pharisees and shake their hands and they would not be able
to do anything about it, because it is not time for Jesus to die. People see what is going on and they are wondering if Jesus is the Messiah and can anyone do more miracles than he is doing. Jesus’s miracles attest to the fact that he is
the Son of God.
I pray: O Lord, your miracles proclaim that you are the Christ, and so do the prophecies. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on you and to walk according to your ways. Let your
Word and Sacraments nourish my body and soul. Forgive me in my sins and help me to do better. Amen.
