John 6:25–33 (ESV)

I Am the Bread of Life (Part 2)
25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Chasing Jesus for the wrong reasons.  Jesus calls them on it.  They are wanting free food instead of the spiritual food the Jesus is offering.  Unfortunately I see this all to often when people who are hungry come to the church wanting physical food and could care less about receiving spiritual food.  I think we need to take note that Jesus still fed those who sought only physical food.  But this is NOT the reason that Jesus came... to feed the hungry.  He came to feed the souls.  The people seem to realize that they have the wrong motive and they want this spiritual food.  They as “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”  Jesus answers them: “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”  It takes faith to believe and the ability to believe comes from God.  Scriptures tell us in Ephesians 2:8–9: “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  Well, wherever you find Jesus, you will find his Word being taught.  The scriptures also state: Romans 10:17 (ESV) “17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”  They have been hearing Jesus.  They don’t have to do anything, simply believe!  The spiritual food is coming from God himself!

I pray: O Lord, help me to feed people this spiritual food by sharing the Words of Jesus.  Let the Holy Spirit convert their hearts into believers, to receive the forgiveness of sin, eternal life, and Salvation.  Not for my glory, but for yours.  Help me to be your instrument, your vessel... to do your will of spreading the words of Christ.  Amen.
