Acts 9:26–31 (ESV)
Saul in Jerusalem
26 And when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join
the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had
preached boldly in the name of Jesus. 28 So he went in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 And he spoke and disputed against the Hellenists. But they were seeking to kill him. 30 And when the brothers learned this,
they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.
31 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the
comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.
Is Saul a Trojan Horse, trying to get within the Apostles and kill them? The Apostles are suspicious because of the terror from Saul’s persecution.
We too as Christians are often suspicious of the plots of others, especially if they have been our enemy. Someone who comes to my mind is a person who betrayed her country and a lot of our soldiers. When I mention the name Jane Fonda among our
elderly who have fought for our country, their eyes role and their demeanor changes. When I point out that she now claims to be a born again Christian, there is not much rejoicing. Why??? This is a great thing!!! Why do we all not rejoice?
Because of doubts and what she did. Well, if God can change Saul’s heart, isn’t it fitting that he can change Jane Fonda’s heart? The Apostles were suspicious, but Barnabas went to Saul’s defense and he is allowed fellowship
among them. Saul preached in Jerusalem, but those who have now been betrayed by Saul due to his conversion want to kill him. The brothers send him to Tarsus. But due Saul’s conversion, persecution began to die off for the time being
and the church experienced peace and the church grew through the power of the Holy Spirit.
I pray: O Lord, I know at times I am suspicious about your work, help me to discern your work from the devil’s
work. Help me to rejoice through you working hand and be as Barnabas to stand in defense of those who need it. Give me boldness that Saul had to stand up to those who believe differently. There are not many paths to heaven, only one.
That one path is Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Forgive me when I fall and point me back to your way. Amen.
