Acts 4:13–22 (ESV)
Peter and John Before the Council (Part 2)
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14 But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16 saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

For the last several days, we have been dealing with the lame man that is accompanying Peter and John at the Council.  The Council is meeting to stop Peter and John.  The Council has a big problem.  It is the lame man.  I have been talking how everyone knew this lame man and couldn’t deny the miracle.  Well, today’s reading, you hear this message straight from the Council.  They can not deny the miracle and how it is impacting the people.  The Council states “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.” This should cause you to stop and scratch your head in bewilderment.  You need to know when to hold the cards and when to fold them.  In light of the miracle, it is best to back off, because even the Council knows that this is a miracle.  The trump card is the 40 year old lame man and because of him, they get to walk out unharmed.  What is amazing is that they are dazzled by the miracle, but not the message.  The message is validated by the miracle.  They acknowledge the miracle... but just can’t bite the bullet on the message.

I pray: O Lord, I proclaim your message without miracles, let the Holy Spirit work, renew, and convert the unbelievers into believers.  What I do have to point to is the greatest miracle of all, Jesus on the Cross.  What more do I need?  Help me to be bold and to share the gospel message.  Amen.
