Acts 2:42–47 (ESV)
The Fellowship of the Believers
42 And they
devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had
all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and
generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
What happened to the assembly of believers after Jesus ascended
to heaven? The Church grew! After Peter’s sermon, over three thousand joined the church. Today’s reading states that the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread (communion),
and prayer. That is exactly what we are doing today, although many congregations are hardly ever holding communion. We have communion twice a week. What was the Last Supper all about? The forgiveness of sins. We still receive
the body and the blood through the wine and bread for the forgiveness of sins. Many teach that communion is symbolic. I ask them... where does the word “symbolic” or “represents” ever show up in the words of institution?
It doesn’t! You are connected today to the cross through communion. Christ comes to us in a very tangible way. They were selling their possessions and giving to the poor. They were living their faith day by day, not just on Sundays
or even Wednesdays. Christ WAS their life! Wow! What an attitude! Did people run away from them??? No, the scriptures state: “And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
I pray: “O Lord, help renew us and excite us over what you have done for us. Help us to live our faith by words and deeds. Help us to celebrate fellowship, Bible Study, Worship, and communion and make
it part of our everyday life. Invigorate us Lord! Amen.
