Luke 24:36–43 (ESV)
Jesus Appears to His Disciples (Part 1)
As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts
arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still
disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them.
To me, this is always
a comical text. You have to read all the accounts to get the humor in it, but what is basically happening is that the disciples are locked up in a room and Jesus suddenly appears in the room. Instead of saying “Booo!!!”, he says
“Peace to you!” It still scared and frightened them. They jumped because they thought he was a ghost. Now what is really going on is that Jesus “appeared” in the room, we often refer to this as he walked through the
walls. I like the idea of teleporting, but he did not use a teleporter, he used his divine power. Now the others are not sure what they are seeing, so Jesus shows them his hands and feet. He invites them to touch him, because he is real and
has a body, unlike a ghost. He also asks for something to eat, showing that he is a real person and eats food. He is real, and he is alive!
I pray: “O Lord, You are 100% man and
100% God. You showed us your divine nature and your human nature. Even though I have not seen, I believe because others have seen you. Through faith, I know that you are my Lord and Savior. Amen.
