Luke 23:44–49 (ESV)
The Death of Jesus
44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. 47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. 49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.

There is something strange going on in this reading and will be missed if you don’t catch it.  The 6th hour is noon and the 9th hour is around 3:00 PM.  The scriptures state that there was darkness over the whole land from noon until 3:00 PM. What was causing the darkness???  Some have said that this was caused by a solar eclipse, but this is impossible because Passover happens during a full moon which puts the placement all wrong for an eclipse.  Now it could be heavy cloud cover, but whatever it was, it was caused by God.  What is important is God’s timing of the darkness at the time of death.  Jesus is the light of the world, but at his death was darkness.  Don’t think that this wasn’t noticed by the people.  The centurion was witnessing all of this.  The scriptures then state that the temple curtain was torn in two.  Most people will gloss right over this to get to something more important.  Well STOP!!!   Back up... because this is very significant.  The Lutheran Study Bible states: “The curtain of the Most Holy Place, where the high priest entered annually on the Day of Atonement to sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice. The old system of sacrifice, priesthood, and temple worship ended; Jesus’ sacrifice opened the way for every repentant sinner to enter into God’s presence (Heb 9:11–12; 10:20).”

46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” After saying this, Jesus breathed is last breath and died.  The question I ask is how can Jesus die???  Jesus was without sin and the Bible tells us that the “wages of sin is death”.  So Jesus could not die... but he did.  This is because he took on your sins and mine.  He carried the weight of the worlds sins and then died.  He did not die because of his sins, but yours.  Many will look at his death on the cross as law, and it is... but it is also Gospel in that he died for you.  His death is not something we do, but something Jesus did for you.  The Gospel calls out even in the darkest hour.  I will not elaborate on the next words, I will just let them speak for themselves.  “47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. 49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.”

I pray: O Lord, what can I say, you are the Son of God.  Your death for my sins.  I’m left speechless, for you Lord were innocent and without sin.  I often think my sins hurt only me, but at this point... it hurt you, Jesus.  I repent of all my sins and want to do better.  I humbly thank you for your substitution and giving me life.  Help me to walk according to your ways and to share the Gospel of what you have done to others.  Help me to be bold and to share your love.  Amen.
