Luke 23:26–31 (ESV)
The Crucifixion (Part 1)
26 And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. 27 And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him. 28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

As Jesus was carrying the cross to Golgotha, he is weakening from all the beatings and physical punishment.  To help him carry the cross, they seized Simon of Cyrene to help Jesus carry the cross.  There is some confusion as to whether Jesus carried his own cross or whether he had help.  It is obvious that Luke and Mark speak of Simon of Cyrene as helping Jesus carry the cross.  There is a possibility that Simon was yanked aside to carry the cross beam which would weigh about 100 lbs.  Otherwise, Simon helped Jesus carry the whole cross due to Jesus weakened state.  Jesus speaks to the women, “Daughters of Jerusalem”,who are mourning and lamenting for him.  Jesus says some statements which seem cryptic and confusing.  He states: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”  What the heck is Jesus saying?  Is he incoherent and mumbling gibberish from his weakened state?  No!  He is actually saying don’t mourn for me but for yourselves who will live through persecution and the destruction of Jerusalem which happened in 70AD.  Jesus is still on his way to the cross.

I pray: O Lord, If I were carrying a cross to my death, I would be too wrapped up in myself to have compassion for others.  How do you do it?  Your love for me is so great, and you have not even reached the cross.  Help me to put others before myself.  Amen.
