Luke 22:63–65 (ESV)
Jesus Is Mocked
63
Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. 64 They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” 65 And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him.
I'm not trying to be a funny here, but it is bad enough to get beaten up, but to do so while being mocked is bad. This is not a laughing matter, but they are really working Jesus over and have blindfolded him.
Now if you can’t see, you don’t know when or from which direction the next punch is coming. Think about that! They kept asking him to “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” What did Jesus do to deserve this? He did nothing
wrong. It should be us! We are the ones who are sinners. This POW (Prisoner of War) treatment is not necessary. This treatment deepens my walk through Good Friday and Easter. Just reading this first section has me in a Good Friday
mood and he is still alive... he hasn’t made it to the cross yet.
I pray: O Lord, It hurts me every time I journey through the Word when the readings focus on the events leading to Jesus’
death. Help me to never take for granted what you endured for me. Help me to know that while this reading troubles me, my sins trouble you. I repent of my sins and want to do better. Your blood was shed for me and you for the very reason
of forgiveness and love. Thank you for all you have done for me. Amen.
