Luke 21:34–38 (ESV)
Watch Yourselves
34
“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake
at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at
night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.
To set today’s reading, it takes place in Jerusalem area
and is in the final week before they nail him to the cross. Jesus is preaching a message that I still very much preach today. So many people are caught up in the ways of the world. They believe in Jesus, but they also believe that it is ok
to live together, abortion is ok, homosexuality and lesbianism is acceptable and maybe even chic, that the ways of the world, tolerance, and acceptability are to be preached everywhere. Jesus has a different message, even the New Testament.
When I write on this topic... many find it offensive and claim I’m not politically correct. Jesus states to “watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day
come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son
of Man.” I want to make it clear that I love all people, but I must stand up for Jesus and God’s Word and call sin sin. I cannot sit back idly and be silent and thus endorse behavior that the Bible speaks against. I
am not talking about hatred towards people, but hatred towards sin. Jesus is concerned about followers falling into worldly temptations. Jesus will be going to the cross for ALL sins, but he wants us to repent and turn away from sin.
I pray: O Lord, help me to not get caught up in worldliness and be lead astray. Help me to love all people and to reach out and share the Gospel in a loving way to all people. Break down the barriers
of hate and help us all to repent and sin no more. Amen.
