Luke 12:49–53 (ESV)
Not Peace, but Division
49 “I came
to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.
52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
This has always been one of the more troublesome sections of the Bible, especially those who are new to the faith. Often people are attracted to Christianity
because of family values, and when they hear this passage, they are confused or turned off. Some are coming from troubled homes seeking peace and here Jesus is saying he came to bring division, not peace. So, let’s break this down.
First of all, when Jesus says “I came to cast fire on the earth” is referring to Judgement Day. Second, when Jesus says “I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress
until it is accomplished,” he is not talking about being baptized with water. He is talking about a baptism of blood and that is his death on the cross. The Kingdom of God is coming and on that day, the sheep (believers) will be separated
from the goats (nonbelievers). The sheep will go to heaven and the goats will go to hell. This is the division he is talking about. The dividing line will be their faith or lack of faith. Don’t let your family or friends
get in the way of your passage to Heaven. This passage is about the end of times, not family life. Christians are to extol good family values, but if they try to derail your faith, don’t let them. I have known some people that were
not willing to become Christian because of their family connections. They could not make the switch for fear of their mother or father. Unfortunately, I must say guys... get serious about your life. Heaven and Hell are very real and
Jesus promised he is coming back.
I pray: O Lord, I pray for all my family to continue in their Christian faith so that division will not come. But if division does come, help me to always keep
you first in my life and my highest priority, even over my children and spouse. Amen.
