Luke 11:45–52 (ESV)
Woe to the Pharisees and the Lawyers (Part 3)
45 One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46 And he said, “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ 50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation. 52 Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”

The lawyers realize that Jesus is speaking negatively against the Pharisees and realize that He is speaking against them too.  One of the lawyers confronted Jesus and said you are also insulting us.  Jesus doesn’t say yes, but he goes straight after them by including them in his response.  Jesus says: “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.”  The lawyers had added to the difficulty of the children of Israel by adding laws which burdened their lives.  Although they increased the laws, they offered no help.  Meanwhile the lawyers and Pharisees sideskirted the laws through loopholes and living the laws outwardly, but not inwardly.  Thus, they are hypocrites.  I kind of look at our government changing the health care laws for everyone, except they are exempted due to their own health care system.
Again Jesus accuses them of honoring the prophets outwardly, but not inwardly.  By their rejection of Jesus, they are still pushing for his death, thus still killing the prophets.  And what makes it worse is that it is one thing to reject Jesus, but to punish others by hindering their belief in Jesus.

I pray: O Lord, again I pray to worship and serve you inwardly and outwardly.  Let my life be a living sacrifice for you.  Let your Holy Spirit shape and change me according to your will.  Help me to stand firm against those who reject you and try to hinder other believers.  Even in the face of death, help me to stand up for Jesus.  Amen,
