Luke 11:29–32 (ESV)
The Sign of Jonah
When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be
to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men
of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
Today’s reading is about
respect and acknowledging Jesus as the Messiah. Jonah was an Old Testament prophet in which God told him to go to Nineveh and tell the people to repent of their evil ways. Jonah said no way and got on a ship sailing the opposite direction.
They came into a bad storm and found out Jonah was running away from God, so they threw him overboard and he was swallowed by a big fish, or perhaps a whale. He was in the belly of the whale for three days when he was spit out onto dry land. He
decided to go to Nineveh after all. (This is a fast summary of Jonah... but not complete).
The people seeking Jesus wanted to see miracles and even when miracles were performed, they wanted more. Jesus
says “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.” Jesus
had a more important message than the miracles. They wanted to see him raise the dead, who will eventually die again, but Jesus was more interested in sharing eternal life with them. He wanted the people to repent and believe through the faith
that He had given them. He remarks again about an Old Testament story where the Queen of Sheba had more respect for Solomon than what they had for Jesus, the Messiah. Jesus is far greater than Jonah, or the Queen of Sheba. Jesus is telling
them that something far greater is here and they need to repent. There are may people today who say Jesus is a prophet, or a great teacher... but they are missing out that He is the promised Messiah.
O Lord, help me to tell others about Jesus, but to understand that many who listened to him did not understand that He is the Messiah. Help me to know and share God’s plan of salvation with all people and to not get frustrated. Use
me to carry out your will. Amen.
