Luke 9:37–43 (ESV)
Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he
suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41 Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long
am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all were astonished
at the majesty of God.
The day after the Transfiguration, a great crowd met him. Why??? They want to see Jesus. They want to hear Jesus and they want to be healed. A desperate father
and no where else to turn... turns to Jesus. “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and
will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” The father is helpless... and so are the disciples, but remember that Jesus is God and the Creator of all things. Jesus, through his compassion
says “Bring your son here.” He heals the boy and gave him back to his father. I know that a lot of people will look at this and say the boy had epilepsy, but let’s not sell Satan short. Luke says he had a demon
and Jesus cast out that demon. I say, let’s believe in the miracle as described in God’s Word. Jesus did this in sight of the great crowd and they “all were astonished at the majesty of God.” Wouldn’t
I pray: O Lord, again I see you casting out demons and healing people. This time you did it in front of a lot of witnesses and they were astonished. Lord, I believe in Satan and
demons, but not as my Lord and Savior. I know that you are the Creator of all things, including fallen angels. I know that you have already defeated Satan on the Cross. Protect me from Satan and help me to stay out of his way. Help
me to keep my eyes fixed on you, the perfecter of my faith. Amen.
