Luke 9:7–9 (ESV)
Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9 Herod
said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.
A short reading with probably a short writeup. Herod the tetrarach is confused about Jesus’s
identity. He thinks Jesus could be John the Baptist raised from the dead. Others think that Jesus is Elijah, while others think of him as an old prophet risen from the dead. I’m sure this is perplexing to Herod, because he had Herod
executed and his head served on a platter. It’s like a problem that just won’t go away. He is confused, but wants to see Jesus. It would be nice today for those who are confused about Jesus’s identity to want to see him.
The world today wants to ridicule Jesus without investigating or reading about Jesus words in the Bible. But when Herod is confused, he wants to see Jesus. I know who Jesus is and I can’t wait to see him in heaven.
I pray: O Lord, I pray for the unbelieving world to want to see Jesus. I pray that as we plant the seeds of faith, the Holy Spirit work on their hearts and convict and convert them into believers. Help me to never
try to convert someone into being a Christian, that is the Holy Spirit’s job. Help me to never think that I can do a better job. Lord, I must admit that it is hard enough to just stick to planting seeds and waiting for the harvest.
Give me boldness and patience. Amen.
