Luke 9:1–6 (ESV)
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles
9 And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim
the kingdom of God and to heal. 3 And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. 5 And wherever they do not
receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
the last several days, the readings have centered around Jesus miracles of healing, raising the dead, and casting out demons. In today’s reading, Jesus sends out the twelve apostles and gives them power and authority over all demons and to cure
diseases. While they were given this power and authority, the reason they were sent out was to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. Jesus gives them unusual instructions that they take nothing with them, no staff for protection, no bag to carry
supplies, nor bread (food)... not even money. They couldn’t even take a change of clothes. They stayed at people’s houses and ate food that was provided. If no one welcomed you, you dusted off your feet and moved on. But
what were they doing? “6And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.” Healing is important, but it is God’s Word that saves!
pray: O Lord, help me to keep my life prioritized correctly. Help me to always put you before my kids, my wife, my job... Help me to keep you as the highest priority. Help me to share your love with others. Let me never neglect my
wife or my kids. I give thanks for the faith you have given me, your forgiveness, eternal life, and salvation itself. Amen.
