Luke 8:34–39 (ESV)

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon (Part 2)

34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

In yesterday’s reading, Jesus met a demon possessed man who had many demons.  The demons knew Jesus was God’s son and they begged to be cast into a herd of pigs.  When Jesus complied, the pigs charged down a bank and fell into a lake and drowned.  Today, we look at this miracle from a different perspective.  The perspective of the herdsmen who just lost their herd of pigs.  Scripture says: “34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country.”  The herdsmen saw and went and told people.   This is what we are supposed to do, but sometimes we do not do a good job of sharing what Jesus does for us, or even sharing that the demons know that Jesus is Lord.  Yet these herdsmen are spreading the news about their financial loss and the people listen.  In our life today, we are told to share the good news, this is part of the great commission.  If we fail, do we think that those who oppose God are being silent too???  With a world turning away from God, shouldn’t we be letting the world now what Jesus has done for us on the cross, an event that even Satan wanted to stop!  Jesus death on the cross was the reason Jesus came to earth, to serve as a substitute for our sins and to serve as a sacrifice for our sins.  For sin to be forgiven, blood must be shed.  Jesus died for the forgiveness of your sins.  The herdsmen took a financial loss and let the god of Money block them from seeing the real miracle of Jesus casting out the demons from this man.  Let’s see how the herdsmen negatively influenced the people.  Scripture says: "35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned.”  We see that when the herdsmen spoke, it carried weight.  They even mentioned the miracle, but the focus was not there.  Instead they want Jesus to leave.  Jesus leaves, but he is not finished with them.  Jesus left behind a witness.  That witness was the man who had the demons cast out.  Scriptures state: “38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.”  We are to not give up sharing the good news.  Jesus left with the message still being proclaimed by a very believable witness.

I pray: O Lord, you did not give up on those who rejected you.  Use me to share the message with people that have rejected you.  Help me to not get discouraged.  Help me to not withhold your message for fear of rejection.  Help me to be bold and to share the news of forgiveness and restoration into your kingdom.  I thank you like the demon possessed man for all that you have done for me.  Amen.

Look at the Words say they "fell away". The had it, but lost it. Just like the Bible says your name can be blotted out of the Book of Life.
