Luke 7:41–50 (ESV)
A Sinful Woman Forgiven (Part 2)
41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50 And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Yesterday, Jesus was eating at a Simon’s house and there were some Pharisee present who were surprised that Jesus was eating with a prostitute.  Jesus knew what they were thinking and answers their question indirectly by asking Simon a question.  Jesus begins by telling a story.  41“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.”  You can easily make a connection that someone who is forgiven a lot will be more grateful than someone who is forgiven little.  This is true, but I think there is something deeper here, and it is the fact that Jesus forgives sinners, even the sins of a prostitute.  I don’t know what you have done in your life, but my God is so great and powerful that he can forgive and does forgive all your sins.  That is what he is all about... forgiveness and restoration.  When we start categorizing or putting ourselves higher than others... then we have lost sight and need to repent.  We are no different than the Pharisees.

Jesus then questions Simon (the Leper- a pharisee), and asks: “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” The woman whose “sins are many” was giving Jesus far greater care and respect than Simon... is forgiven.  We should be rejoicing over this, not criticizing it.  Glory be to God!  But the Pharisees response: “49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this, who even forgives sins?’ 50 And he said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’” Remember, we are not to judge who God forgives, but we are to share the Gospel with all people and let the Holy Spirit work in their hearts.

I pray: O heavenly Father, I give thanks to you for forgiving ALL my sins.  I know what I have done and not sure what all I have left undone.  I know I have not loved you with all my heart.  Forgive me and restore me so that I may “go in peace.”  Amen.
