Luke 6:46–49 (ESV)
Build Your House on the Rock
46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

We have seen over the week that Jesus wants forgiveness over judgment and he wants us to live as Christian instead of saying we are Christians.  The people should be able to tell by our actions, not our lips.  In today’s reading, Jesus drives this point even more.  There is a difference between lip service and action.  I know a couple that call themselves Christians, yet they are living together.  The hard truth is that they are giving lip service, but their actions are not in line with God’s ways.  Not only are they leading each other into sin, they are being a negative witness to all those who know them.  This type of unrepentant sin is dangerous.  Jesus says: 46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them.”  Action is clearly louder than words.  Notice that they called Jesus Lord.  But Jesus asks “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord’ and not do what I tell you?" This is where we need to all look into the mirror and see ourselves as sinners.   When we see our sins, we are better able to address them.  When we refuse to look into the mirror, then we keep living as we want to instead of how God wants us to live.  It is painful to have sin pointed out to us.  We will try to rationalize it to a point of even twisting the scriptures to support our stance.  But wrong is wrong.

Jesus uses an example to drive his point home.  “I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

I pray: Lord, I pray a tough request, I ask that you expose my sins to me so that I may address them, repent, and change.  Give me courage to be changed, help me to not fight back, but to embrace the working of the Holy Spirit to shape and mold me into a better man of God.  Help me to be a living sacrifice, to proclaim Jesus Christ by my actions and my lips.  Renew a right spirit within me.  I repent of my sins and graciously receive your mercy and forgiveness.  Amen.
