Luke 6:43–45 (ESV)
A Tree and Its Fruit
43
“For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good person out of the good treasure
of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
If you remember from Wednesday’s reading, it was about
not judging others and to remove the log out of your own eye before you try to remove the speck out of your bother’s eye. Today’s reading compliments Jesus teaching in that Jesus is saying we are not only to talk the talk, but to walk the
walk. How can you tell if a Christian is really a Christian? Well, you can’t only God knows. However, a Christian will bear good fruit. A good indicator to someone who says they believe and have faith is to see the fruit they
bear. I know a lot of people claim to be Christians, yet their lifestyle does not match up. We are all sinners and fall short, but we should be repenting and turning away from our sins. Being sorry, but not changing your ways is not repentance.
As a Christian, we are a new creation, and we are to shed our former ways and walk according to God’s will. There are so many sins that it is wrong to single any one out, but we are to produce good, not evil. We are to live according to God’s
will, not our will. Do you have a sin that is controlling you? We are not saved by our works or how we live, but by faith. Though if we are faithful to our Savior, we will want to change.
I
pray: Lord, help me to live according to your will. Expose my sinful ways to me and help me to change. Let the Holy Spirit work in me and sanctify me according to your will. I give thanks for your forgiveness. Help me to not
judge others and to work on myself. Mold me and shape me according to your will. Amen.
