Luke 6:24–26 (ESV)
Jesus Pronounces Woes
24 “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
25 “Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry.
“Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
26 “Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.

(On vacation and writing from Branson, Missouri.  I saw the Acrobats of China tonight and it was awesome!)

Yesterday, we covered Luke’s four blessings (beatitudes) and today he balances them with four woes.  These four are exact opposites of the blessings.

But (change of perspective), woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.  (Blessed are the poor, woe to you who are rich) direct opposites.  Can a rich man get to heaven?  Yes, but it is more difficult because his trust is usually in himself instead of the Lord.

“Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry” (Blessed are you  who are hungry now, woe to you who are full now) Again direct opposites.

“Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.”  (Blessed are you who weep now, Woe to you who laugh now) Again a direct opposite.

"Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets." (Blessed are you when people hate you, Woe to you, when all people speak well of you) The concluding woe is again a direct opposite.

Something to think about is that the world seeks and wants the woes, while they do not want the blessings.  It is Christians that seek the blessings.  God’s ways are not the ways of the world.

I pray: Lord, help me to appreciate the blessings you have given me.  We often want and pray for more, more, more.  Help me to be happy with what I have and to realize that the greatest blessing I could receive is the faith you have already given me.  With that faith comes forgiveness, eternal life, and salvation.  What more do I need??? Amen.
