Luke 6:17–19 (ESV)
Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude
he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who
were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.
It is obvious that there are far more people gathered around than
the newly chosen 12 apostles. It says “with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacost of Tyre and Sidon." I picture this as A LOT OF PEOPLE! The word is spreading
about Jesus and people want to hear, see, and experience Jesus. Those who came wanted “to hear him and to be healed of their diseases.” Part of the problem is that the people are more interested in being healed than to hear
his message. This is true even today. People come to the “church” wanting something other than what is being given. It could be food, money, clothing, medicine, a hotel room, gas money, etc... and there is a place for churches
to reach out to people. We are servants and are here to help people. I’m not trying to take anything away from this responsibility of the church. But what is more important is that we are teaching and preaching God’s word.
If Jesus healed a blind man or raised a man from the dead... they will still go to hell if they are nonbelievers. Heaven is very real and so is hell. Those who come and are satisfied with handouts, money, or healing will still go to hell without
faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. The compassion of Jesus is reaching out... the message He speaks is eternal life giving. We have some neat electronic billboards in town that change showing different advertisements. I
sit there dazzled by them and waiting for the next add. When I drive away... I can't remember the ads. Dazzled by the electronic billboard, but missed the intended message! The message is what is important. We can do the same thing
sitting in church if were standing up and sitting down, but not paying attention to what is being said. Verse 19 states “And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.” Yes, those who
came were healed, but the beauty of it is that some of them would have heard his message and received “spiritual healing” which is far better than “physical healing”. Spiritual healing is restores you into God’s Kingdom
and brings eternal life.
I pray: Lord, help me to always be present with open ears, open mind, and a open heart... to receive your Word and to let it take root in me, to change and mold me, according
to your Will. Help me to always keep my eyes focused on you and to give thanks for your forgiveness and restoration. Help me to reach out and to help others, but help me to not forget to share the greater gift of faith. Amen.
