Luke 4:38–41 (ESV)
Jesus Heals Many
38 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

In today’s reading, Jesus heals Simon’s mother-in-law who was sick with a high fever.  He simply stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.  My doctor usually gives me prescription for medicine and maybe a shot, and I still go away sick.  Jesus is the great physician and he not only heals Simon’s mother-in-law, but he heals “all those who had any who were sick with various diseases [who were] brought them to him.”  Again he is also casting out demons and the demons were crying “You are the Son of God!”  If the demons know that Jesus is the Son of God, it sure seems like it would be easy to teach this to the world.

Now, what I find extremely interesting in today’s reading is Simon’s mother-in-law.  Remember that Simon is Peter.  Peter has a mother-in-law.  Peter IS married!  The Catholic church claims that Peter is their first Pope.  The first Pope was married!  So why can’t the Catholic priest marry today when their first Pope was married?  I don’t know.  The Catholic church has had a history of allowing marriage throughout periods of history.  Today, the Catholic church does not allow the priest to marry (unless they were married before priesthood).  This has been their practice for hundreds of years.  It hasn’t always been that way.  I find it interesting that the Catholic church has waffled back and forth on the marriage issue while the Bible says pastors [priests] are to be married in 1Timothy 3:2–4 (ESV): “2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, ...”  This is also found in Titus says: “Titus 1:5–6  “5 This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— 6 if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.”  In the Old Testatment, it is God, not man, who said: “12 He shall not go out of the sanctuary, lest he profane the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him: I am the Lord. 13 And he shall take a wife in her virginity. 14 A widow, or a divorced woman, or a woman who has been defiled, or a prostitute, these he shall not marry. But he shall take as his wife a virgin of his own people, 15 that he may not profane his offspring among his people, for I am the Lord who sanctifies him. Leviticus 21:12–15 (ESV).”  I hope that the Catholic church will open up on this issue and allow priest to marry.  We see that it has caused a lot of problems today and throughout history.  Well, all this over “Simon’s mother-in-law.”  I pray: O Lord, help us to bring our problems to you.  You are our Protector.  Help us to bring our joys to the Lord, too.  Let us remember to give thanks to the Lord in all situations... good or bad. Through your miraculous healings and casting out of demons,... we too know that you are the Son of God!  Amen.
