Luke 4:14–15 (ESV)
Jesus Begins His Ministry
14 And Jesus returned
in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
Wow, a short section... It’s
like having the night off. Today’s reading says that Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee. Jesus was not being led by the Spirit to Galilee, but think of it as Jesus went to Galilee, he was full of it (Spirit!).
The reading says a “report” about him went out through all the surrounding country. The translation of pheme for “report” is acceptable, but it is not how I would translate it. I prefer the word “News”
which has been adopted by the New American Standard Bible (NASB), New International Version (NIV), and many others. The King James Version uses the translation of “fame”. The Greek word “pheme”
is not a written report, but a verbal rumor, news or fame. This news is spreading throughout the country. Verse 15 hits says “And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.” Jesus spent most of his ministry
“teaching” and this is how he began his ministry. He went to the synagogues to teach people, much like when he was a teenage boy. His wisdom is captivating and astounds the people of all ages. He was teaching where people gathered
to worship and learn about God. We tend to think of temple and synagogue as one in the same, but the Temple was in Jerusalem and synagogues were religious gathering places scattered through the lands. What he taught was being glorified by all people.
What he is teaching is God’s Word. It has the power to change hearts. I pray: O Lord, your word is a lamp unto my feet, help me to seek your Word and let your Word shape and mold me according to your will. Teach me to share
your teachings so that they go out as Good News throughout the land. Amen!
