Luke 2:41–52 (ESV)
The Boy Jesus in the Temple
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. 43 And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His
parents did not know it, 44 but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, 45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him.
46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And
his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s
house?” 50 And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.
I remember when I was a boy, I was shopping with my Mom at the mall. I wanted to go to the toy store, but I knew
she didn’t want to go. So I decided to go without her, I knew where the toy store was located in the mall. I was having the time of my life, doing real shopping, when the police started asking me questions. They interrupted my
shopping by taking me back to my Mom. That turned out to be a rough day. In today’s reading, Mary and Joseph journeyed to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of the Passover. All Israelites were required to make an annual pilgrimage to
Jerusalem. As was the custom, they joined with family and friends and went to Jerusalem. Jesus was twelve years old. Now Jesus was a little older than me, so he chose to go to the Temple instead of the toy store. This was a good call
on his part, it is hard to get into trouble when you’re at the church. What is unusual is that this twelve year old is not sitting around and listening to the teachers, it was the other way around. Remember that Jesus has been filled with
wisdom and he is teaching the teachers. Meanwhile, the family has headed back home. All Israelites make this journey, so it is not unusual for may Mary to travel with some of her family and Joseph to travel with some of his family and may Jesus
traveling with friends or cousins. When Jesus shows up missing, about a days journey, they began searching. This is probably a case of I though you had him,... no, I thought you had him. Well, they back track to Jerusalem and they find him
in the temple. When his parents found him, they were astonished because of the things he was saying and here is a twelve year old teaching the teachers. Well, mama is not happy, but Jesus responds “Why were you looking for me? Did
you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?" They did not understand what he was saying, but took him home. I’m sure they were able to recall the angel’s message to them and they knew he was God’s son. They take
him home. The scriptures say that Jesus was submissive to them, which is in compliance with the Fourth Commandment: “Honor your father and mother.” Well, Jesus complied. He also “increased in wisdom and in stature and
in favor with God and man.” I pray: O Lord, Jesus was teaching the teachers at the age of twelve, let me be open and receptive to his teaching through God’s Word. Ignite a fire within me to seek His word and to grow in
faith and spirit. In Jesus Christ name I pray, Amen.
