Luke 2:22–38 (ESV)
Jesus Presented at the Temple
22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,
    29     “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace,
according to your word;
    30     for my eyes have seen your salvation
    31     that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
    32     a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your people Israel.”
33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

There are a lot of details in this which are important, but I want to focus on the big picture of what is going on.  Mary and Joseph are being good parents an raising their son, Jesus, in the ways of the Lord.  They are fulfilling the law through the circumcision and presenting the child at the Temple.  What they are doing is the equivilent to today taking your children to church and baptizing them.  Later on, making certain that your children go through confirmation.  This is part of raising your child up in the ways of the Lord.  I realize that some churches do not have confirmation and may baptize at a later age.  Regarding infant baptism is a whole different topic that would take sufficient room.  Baptism is God’s work in you, he washes you clean and gives you faith.  Look at the similarity of baptism and the old testament circumcision.  Both mark you as a child of God.  Did the child have a say in it?  Not when God said to do it on the eighth day.  I laugh because I would have ran as fast as I could when I saw the doctor coming at me on the eighth day. :)   Look at the comparison of circumcision to baptism in Colossians 2:8-14.  Back to the big picture.  Whatever your denomination is, to raise your child in the ways of the Lord is to raise them in the church.  Take them to church.  Mary and Joseph were raising Jesus in the church.
Secondly, Simeon had been told that he would not die until he sees the Messiah. This prophecy is fulfilled simply by Mary and Joseph raising their child in the ways of the Lord.  It helps a little too that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah.  Scripture states: “25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.”  Simeon recognizes Jesus as the Christ Child and breaks out what we call the “Nunc Dimmitis” and recognizes that he has seen the Christ and he can now die in peace.  Mary and Joseph would not have been expecting this.  I imagine that they looked at each other and thought “wow!”  How did he know?  I pray: Lord, help me to raise my children in the ways of the Lord.  Help me to instruct them in God’s word and ways.  Help me to not fail in this God given task.  Thank you also for your confirmation from Simeon that Jesus really is the Christ child.  Lord, thank you for my faith, help me in my doubts.  Amen.
