Luke 1:39–45 (ESV)
Mary Visits Elizabeth
In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled
with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting
came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
Like I had mentioned the other day,
Elizabeth and Mary are cousins, they are related. Coincidental? I think not. Elizabeth is considered blameless before the Lord and Mary has found favor of the Lord. When you meet a dedicated Christian husband and wife, then usually
their kids are dedicated as well. This is not always the case, but Mary and Elizabeth came from a faithful family and the husband and wife passed their faith onto their children. This is why it is so important to raise your family in the
church. I have heard of families letting their children pick out what church to go to, I scratch my head and want to ask (and have done so)... do you think your children know what’s best for them? Most kids will pick fun over doctrine.
Would you let your 6 year old pick out a brain surgeon to remove a tumor or would you make that choice. They may choose Bozo the Clown because he makes them laugh. I’m not trying to be funny or cute, raising a family spiritually so that they
turn out like Elizabeth and Mary is not easy. I’m not sure I can even do it. The choices that parents make often gets passed down to their children.
What I think is mind blowing is that when Mary
enters Zechariah’s house, Elizabeth’s baby leaps in the womb. Remember that the baby is John, and even while still in the womb, John knows that presence of Jesus Christ just entered the room. Wow! Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit
and cries out “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” Elizabeth is blessed with John, but she knows and acknowledges that Mary is blesses with the Messiah. She says: “And why is this
granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” The baby in Mary’s womb is the Lord of Elizabeth. Well, she is 100% right! Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. Elizabeth is so excited that she shares this
with Mary about John leaping: “44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
I pray: Lord, help me as a parent to raise my children in the ways of the Lord. I pray for those who have not had kids yet to prepare themselves for God’s kingdom by attending church and bible study. I pray for those who have raised
their children to encourage their children to raise their children in the ways of the Lord. Lord, help us to never despise your word and sacraments, to find joy in hearing the preaching of your word. Amen!
