(Away at a Pastor's Conference--sorry for the delay)
Luke 1:18–25 (ESV)
And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” 19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you
this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were
wondering at his delay in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute. 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went
to his home.
24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away
my reproach among people.”
Yesterday, the angel describes John’s ministry, but today we focus on Zechariah’s lack of faith. I mean, an Angel of the Lord speaks to Zechariah and now
he questions the angel. “How shall I know this? He further questions God’s ability by saying “I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years. Zechariah is punished for questioning God’s ability. He is unable
to speak. How often do we try to question God or doubt his ability? One area that I see a lot of doubting is in the six days of creation. We want God to explain how he could create the world in six days, yet would we believe it? I know
I struggled with this issue myself. I finally came to the understanding that my God is Almighty and All Powerful. Do I believe in a God that is so powerful that he could have done it six days, or even one day? It is interesting that God disciplined
Zechariah when we question God all the time. Who are we to question God. I think we all fall guilty of this and Zechariah is a good teaching example for all of us. If God tells us to jump, then JUMP! Don’t ask how high, just JUMP!
Elizabeth became pregnant with John, but remains hidden for the first 5 months. Maybe it was because of her age, maybe embarrassment, maybe she wanted to come out into the public for the world to see
and not wonder if she is pregnant, but the world would know she is pregnant. Would she be on the cover of People magazine with her baby bump along with the Kim Kardashian. I don’t think so, but she would be in the news displayed as
a freak, not recognizing the miracle from God. Elizabeth’s pregnancy is a miracle! Elizabeth’s pregnancy is part of God’s plan. This same God also created YOU. We tend to forget that God planned us before the creation
of the world. Now aren’t you special! I pray: Lord, we so often discount you creative hand in miracles and try to take credit ourselves. We often try to take credit for our faith and our salvation. Oh, Lord, we are wrong
and repent that you had this all planned out long before our parent knew each other. Forgive us Lord and help us in our unbelief... to believe! Amen!
