Revelation 22:1–5 (ESV)
The River of Life
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding
its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will
be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
The water of the River of Life is
flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb through the middle of the street. Anyone may drink from this water who resides in heaven. Now we were cut off from this River of Life and also the Tree of Life in Genesis when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden
fruit. It is interesting that the Tree of Life is found in the first book of the bible and is taken away as well. It is not until the last book of the bible that the river of life and the Tree of Life are restored. What fills in the gap in
time from the first book Genesis to the last book Revelation? It is Jesus Christ. The River of Life brings life and in the absence of the river, it is our baptism that brings life through water. The Tree of Life brought life if you
ate of it's fruit. Well, we lost that tree, but Jesus death on a tree is also what brings life. It is Jesus who bridges the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Here is a helpful hint, in Bible
Study classes, whenever the pastor asks a question and you don’t know the answer, just say Jesus! It usually works! I find it fascinating that Jesus is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end, and the tree of life is found at the beginning
and the end. Now, I must ask, if the Tree of Life was taken away in Genesis, how did it stay alive until the book of Revelation. Now this is a real deep question! How did it stay alive? Well the reason is Jesus, because he is the light
of the world and trees need light to live. So yes, Jesus is the answer! Hopefully you saw that one coming! I just hope that the fruit of the Tree of Life is great tasting and everyone loves it. It would be a bummer to get there and
hate the flavor of the fruit. Don’t worry, that won’t happen. I pray: Lord I look forward to eating of the fruit from the Tree of Life and to draw living water from the River of Life to quench my thirst. The water must
be plentiful and great tasting, because we will thirst no more. Help me to trust in you to provide my daily bread until you come or death, whichever comes first. I give thanks for your precious gift of everlasting life. To see you face to
face will be glorious. Amen!
